A large number of patients avoid visiting the dentist because of dental anxiety. These fears are either irrational or because of past experiences. I go to my dental practise every 6 months and have never had any issues visiting my dentist. I?ve managed to avoid a filling but have had a range of treatments and been fine.

Having a filling seems to be a common fear among those who avoid the dentist. People often recount tales of giant needles being injected into gums and then the age-old story of the pain killers not working as your teeth are pulled from your jaw. As a result many avoid the dentist because of dental practise phobia.

People that avoid dental practises can end up with lots of teeth problems. Not visiting the dentist can result in tooth decay and gum disease. These conditions will give you bad breath but lack of treatment can result in teeth falling out. Dentists can stop this and also save your life by finding mouth cancer.

It is for these reasons dental practises are trying to overcome dental anxiety in order to get people to go to the dentist. Many have been offering patients the opportunity to discuss their fears with their dentist and the possible solutions to overcome these fears. Often dental practises that have their own branded dental plans will offer different types of sedation, either by gas or injection, as well as options like counselling services, hypnotherapy and distraction techniques.
